What to Expect
Stop at: Castle Mountain
Castle Mountain gets its name from its unique shape, resembling an ancient castle when viewed from afar. With its towering height and steep contours, it is one of the most impressive peaks in the Banff area. The highest point of Castle Mountain stands at approximately 2,768 meters (9,081 feet), making it an ideal challenge for mountaineers and a perfect spot for photographers. The mountain's distinct appearance, with its jagged rock formations, looks especially striking during sunrise or sunset, giving it a timeless feel. The rock layers at the summit are composed of ancient sedimentary rocks, which have shaped its majestic form and made it a treasure trove for geology enthusiasts.
Stop at: Lake Louise
Lake Louise is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and majestic mountain views, known as the "Jewel of the Rockies." The lake's mesmerizing turquoise color comes from glacial rock flour suspended in the water, creating a sparkling gem-like effect under the sunlight. It is hailed as one of the Top Ten Most Beautiful Lakes in the World. Lunch recommendation: Enjoy an English afternoon tea or lakeside coffee at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.
Pass by: Icefields Parkway
This road is rated as one of the most scenic drives in the world. On the way to Bow Lake, you can enjoy views of glaciers, towering peaks, and lakes, with occasional sightings of grizzly bears and bighorn sheep.
Stop at: Bow Lake
Bow Lake is the source of the Bow River and one of the most impressive lakes in the Canadian Rockies. Although not as famous as Lake Louise or Moraine Lake, it offers stunning views of the Bow Glacier and the waterfall at its base. What makes this place truly special is its remote and tranquil location.
Stop at: Peyto Lake
Next, visit Peyto Lake, famous for its sapphire-blue waters, picturesque mountain backdrop, and unique maple-leaf shape. The entire lake resembles a maple leaf, offering a serene and breathtaking view.
Stop at: Athabasca Glacier
At the Columbia Icefield, take a ride on the unique Ice Explorer (snow coach) (additional cost) to reach the Athabasca Glacier, 300 meters above. 1 to 2-hour stop at the attraction. Snow coach tickets not included.
