What to Expect
Stop at: Bow Lake
Bow Lake is a serene alpine lake along the Icefields Parkway, known for its crystal-clear turquoise water and dramatic mountain backdrop. Fed by glaciers from the Wapta Icefield, the lake reflects surrounding peaks like a mirror on calm summer days. It’s a peaceful stop perfect for photos, short walks along the shore, and taking in the raw beauty of the Canadian Rockies.
Stop at: Athabasca Glacier
Sightseeing: View the glacier from designated roadside viewpoints and nearby trails. Short Hike: Walk the Toe of the Glacier Trail to get close to the glacier’s edge (about 1 km round trip). Photography: Capture stunning views of the glacier, surrounding peaks, and moraine landscape. Interpretive Signs: Learn about the glacier’s history and retreat through informative signs along the trail. Rest of the time will be allocated for transportation between spots.
Stop at: Sunwapta Falls and Canyon
Discover the power and beauty of Sunwapta Falls, where glacier-fed waters plunge through a dramatic canyon just off the Icefields Parkway. A short, easy walk brings you to breathtaking viewpoints, with the thunder of the falls all around. Explore forested trails to the peaceful lower falls and enjoy a perfect spot for nature photography and a scenic picnic. A must-stop for anyone exploring the Canadian Rockies!
Stop at: Tangle Creek Falls
Tangle Creek Falls in summer is a refreshing alpine waterfall fed by snowmelt, flowing powerfully down rocky cliffs surrounded by lush mountain scenery. It’s an easy roadside stop, perfect for quick photos, a short walk, and enjoying the cool mist on a warm day.
Stop at: Peyto Lake
Peyto Lake is one of the most iconic lakes in the Canadian Rockies, famous for its unreal turquoise color and unique wolf-shaped form. From the scenic viewpoint, the lake opens up like a natural masterpiece, surrounded by glaciers, rugged peaks, and endless alpine wilderness. In summer, the vibrant color created by glacial rock flour is at its brightest, making Peyto Lake a breathtaking stop and a must-see highlight of any Rockies journey.
Pass by: Crowfoot Glacier
Crowfoot Glacier is a striking glacier visible directly from the Icefields Parkway. Once shaped like a crow’s foot, it has slowly retreated over time, offering a powerful reminder of climate change.
