What to Expect
TO THE MOUNTAINS
Stop at: Calgary Marriott Downtown Hotel
We pick you up from the Marriott Downtown Hotel in Calgary and begin your Banff camping tour! Once we have everyone picked up, we begin our 2 hour journey into the Rocky Mountains and Banff National Park. We make a quick stop in Canmore, where you can stock up on last minute supplies, like bug spray, sunscreen and alcohol if you desire. We arrive at our campsite in Lake Louise and go through a detailed orientation of your Rockies camping tour, and set up tents with the help of your guide. Enjoy a delicious welcome dinner and get to know your new tour friends around the campfire.
COLUMBIA ICEFIELD & ATHABASCA GLACIER
Stop at: Icefields Parkway
We don’t waste any time on your Banff camping package and head straight into the heart of the Rockies, exploring the Icefields Parkway today. A short drive from our campsite in Lake Louise, bring us to the Icefields Parkway, which is one of the most photographed and famous highways in the world. You will soon see why! As we enter Jasper National Park, we are greeted by the most imposing glacier in the Rockies, known as Athabasca Glacier and part of the Columbia Icefields. You will have the chance to walk to the base of it, option to go for a guided glacier walk, or take a guided hike to a viewpoint far above the glacier for some amazing bird’s eye views and a tasty picnic. Typical Hike: Wilcox Pass (10 km, 450 m Elevation, 3-4 Hours) Driving: 2 Hours
ICEFIELDS PARKWAY
Stop at: Icefields Parkway
The Icefields Parkway is too much to appreciate in just one day of your Banff camping trip, so we head up there for another day of spectacular beauty and world class views. Today we venture to Bow Lake and go for a guided hike, either to a high alpine lake, or to see a waterfall cascading down from a glacier and feeding into the lake below. Either way, you are up for some classic Rockies beauty, pristine air and great photo opportunities. After your guided hike, we head to Peyto Lake, so you can admire and photograph one of the most recognizable lakes in the Rockies! Typical Hike: Bow Glacier Falls (9 km, 300 m elevation, 3 hours) Driving: 1.5 Hours
LAKE LOUISE & MORAINE LAKE
Stop at: Lake Louise
Today we hike right by our camp, at Lake Louise! There are few words to describe what hiking among the mountains around Lake Louise in the morning light are like. If we are lucky, ice may break off from the cliffs far above (and safely across the valley), and crash down with thunderous booms echoing around the valley. After our hike we visit Moraine Lake, perhaps one of the most sought after and tough to get to attractions in Banff National Park. The waters are a stunning clear blue, reflecting the majestic peaks behind it. Later in the afternoon we head 1.5 hours West, passing through Yoho National Park to Golden, where we will be based for the next 3 nights. Golden is a lesser known mountain town in BC, which lies right between 3 national parks. Typical Hike: Plain of Six Glaciers (15 km, 700 m elevation, 4-6 hours) Driving: 1.5 hours
YOHO NATIONAL PARK
Stop at: Yoho National Park
We head deep into the Yoho Valley, coming face to face with the highest waterfall in the Canadian Rockies, which is so tall most of the water turns to mist before it hits the ground! You can get so close to the waterfall that you’d be soaked if you want, which can be a nice idea on a hot sunny day! We hike the Iceline Trail, getting up high and with a bird’s eye view down on Takakkaw Falls, which suddenly doesn’t look so big anymore! Our guided hike on the Iceline Trail brings us right past the Emerald Glacier, which towers right above us for a really cool perspective. This is one of the best hiking trails in the Rockies, but so few people know about it, so with any luck, we will have the alpine almost totally to ourselves! Typical Hike: Iceline Trail (12 km, 500 m Elevation, 4-5 Hours) Driving: 1.5 Hours
RAFT THE KICKING HORSE RIVER OR HIKE IN YOHO NATIONAL PARK
Stop at: Kicking Horse River
Some get kicked by the horse and some kick it. Want to see which group you’re in? This is your chance to change up your perspective and raft down the famed Kicking Horse River with some expert guides to make it fun, but keep you safe. Here’s a cool fact: the very same water you saw falling down Takakkaw Falls yesterday has taken roughly 16 hours to rush down the valley bottom and meet you the next day as your raft in it. This is a fun rafting adventure that is beginner friendly and very safe. Perfect for rafting enthusiasts or first timers. Try it out! If you don’t feel like getting soaked from head to toe in glacial water, you can choose to go for another guided hike in Yoho National Park with your guide. Time permitting, you may also be able to squeeze in a visit to Wapta Falls to see the entire Kicking Horse river plunge over a ledge in one thunderous rush!
BANFF HOT SPRINGS & CALGARY DROP OFF
Stop at: Banff
On the final day of your Banff camping tour we have one more delicious breakfast and pack up camp. After loading the van we head through Yoho NP bound for the famous mountain town of Banff, where we stop to soak in the historic mineral springs, that first brought travelers and visitors to Banff.
